Apinat bio

APINAT BIO is a range of biodegradable thermoplastic bioplastics (TPE-E or TPC) which conform to the EN 13432 standard
These compounds include soft and rigid grades, special food contact approved grades and the “Ok Compost” certification of compostability.
APINAT BIO is the only soft biodegradable bioplastic available on the market, with an international patent.
These bioplastics enable the production of rigid-soft articles through overmoulding which are totally biodegradable.

Case History

 

THE ITALIAN TRIDENT: ICA, API and SACMI, the Italian trident develops a 100% biodegradable & compostable capsule for hot beverages.

Presented for the first time at INTERPACK 2014 at the ICA stand, the 100% biodegradable, compostable single serve capsule for hot beverages proved to be a big hit, arousing considerable levels of interest and curiosity.
The capsule was designed by ICA and obtained starting from a compound belonging to API biodegradable range, APINAT BIO; thanks to their chemical structure and versatility, these compounds can easily be processed using widely available technologies and have an extensive application range, being used in industries as varied as footwear, agriculture and, of course, packaging.
The cap-making compression technology, for which SACMI is so renowned, has been able to take full advantage of the unique rheology and behaviour of the molten material, APINAT BIO. Besides, the flexibility of this technology has resulted in optimising the APINAT BIO compound reaching an outstanding production output (up to 600 capsules/minute in a CCM 24 cavity machine) and maintaining the functional, biodegradable and compostable performance of the capsule.
Stemming from a joint project by ICA Spa, API Spa and SACMI, this latest development confirms and reinforces these Italian leading firms’ commitment to the high-innovation development needed to resolve the planet’s burgeoning environmental issues and finally offering consumers a truly completely biodegradable and compostable capsule for hot beverages.

 


 

iNature, the biodegradable cover for iPhone made in APINAT BIO

 

inature_arancioinature_bluIn 2011 the Italian company BIOMOOD Ltd launched the first 100% biodegradable iPhone Cover with the iNature brand. This success is the result of collaboration with the Italian company API SpA, manufacturer of thermoplastic compounds. Thanks to continuous investment and development in the world of bioplastics, API created APINAT BIO, the material used for the production of the Cover.

 

APINAT BIO is a bioplastic that was developed and patented by API, and what makes it really special is that it will biodegrade in an aerobic environment in full accordance with EN 13432, EN 14995 and ASTM D6400. This makes it particularly well suited to the vision of the iNature Project that was entirely designed to target zero environmental impact with every detail designed and built to be totally biodegradable.

 

Thanks to the physical and mechanical properties of APINAT BIO, all the basic requirements could be fully satisfied for creating this Cover, in particular the need for a high degree of flexibility and softness to protect the smartphone from bumps and falls, as well as also having a practical, anti-slip surface.

The Cover even comes packaged in eco-friendly material made of recycled paper with water-based dyes.

The perfect combination of Italian design and practical application shows the final consumer that fashion and an environmentally conscious lifestyle can go together perfectly.
